Interior Painting
Quick answer
Most interior walls in Australian homes need repainting every 4 to 10 years. Hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and kids’ rooms need it sooner, often every 2 to 5 years. Don’t just go by the calendar: marks that won’t wash off, sun-faded walls, peeling in wet areas, returning cracks, yellowed trims, water stains and dated colours all tell you it’s time.
There’s no single rule for how often to repaint inside. A spare bedroom might look fine after ten years, while the hallway in a house with three kids and a dog needs a refresh every few years.
Here’s a practical guide from Adelaide painters: typical intervals by room, and the seven signs that tell you your walls are due.
Typical repaint intervals by room
| Room | Typical interval | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Adult bedrooms | 6 to 10 years | Low traffic, little moisture |
| Living and dining | 4 to 7 years | Sun, furniture knocks, daily use |
| Kitchens and bathrooms | 3 to 5 years | Steam, grease, cleaning |
| Hallways and stairs | 3 to 5 years | Constant scuffs and bumps |
| Kids’ rooms | 2 to 4 years | Wear, and changing tastes |
| Rental properties | 1 to 3 years | Between-tenancy wear |
Ranges as reported in Paintpal’s Australian guide. Quality paint and good preparation push you towards the longer end.
01Marks that won’t wash off
If a gentle wipe no longer shifts scuffs, or scrubbing leaves a shiny patch or takes the paint with it, the finish has worn out. This shows up first in hallways, around light switches, behind chairs and along stair walls.
02Faded or uneven colour on sunny walls
Adelaide’s strong sun fades interior walls too, especially near west- and north-facing windows. Take down a picture frame. If the wall behind it is noticeably brighter, the rest of the room has faded.
Touch-ups won’t match faded paint, so the whole wall (or room) needs repainting for an even finish.
03Peeling, bubbling or flaking in wet areas
Bathrooms, laundries and kitchens take the most moisture. Peeling around showers, on bathroom ceilings or behind the stove means moisture is getting under the paint. Often there’s mould behind it.
The fix: find the cause (ventilation or a leak), treat mould, prime, and use a wet-area paint. See why paint bubbles and how to fix it.
04Cracks in cornices and above doors
Hairline cracks where the ceiling meets the wall, or running diagonally from the corners of doors and windows, are common in Adelaide because of our reactive clay soils. They open and close with the seasons.
The fix: rake out and fill with flexible, paintable products before repainting. Wide or growing cracks should be checked before painting.
AJ Blunt tip
Mark the ends of a crack with a pencil and date it. If it grows past your marks over a few months, get it looked at before you repaint.
05Yellowed trims and ceilings
White doors, skirtings and ceilings that have turned cream or yellow are usually older oil-based enamel ageing, or years of cooking and heating residue. Kitchens and rooms with little natural light yellow fastest.
The fix: clean, prime and repaint with a modern water-based enamel that stays white longer.
06Water stains and ceiling marks
Brown rings or patches on ceilings are a sign of a past (or current) leak from the roof, gutters, a shower or a hot water service. Painting over them with standard paint won’t work. The stain bleeds straight back through.
The fix: fix the leak first, let the area dry, then seal with a stain-blocking primer before repainting.
07Dated colours or a patchwork of touch-ups
Sometimes the paint is fine but the colours aren’t. Apricot, heavy cream or cool 2010s grey can date a home as much as old carpet. Years of touch-ups in slightly different shades also leave walls looking patchy in certain light.
If you’re thinking of selling or leasing, fresh neutral walls are one of the most cost-effective updates. Read how interior and exterior painting adds value to your property, and our guide to 8 pre-sale painting jobs.

How to make your next interior paint job last longer
- Choose premium paint. It holds colour and cleans better for longer.
- Match the sheen to the room. Washable finishes in busy areas, wet-area paint in bathrooms.
- Ventilate. Run exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, and open windows on dry days.
- Clean gently. Use a soft cloth and mild soapy water, not abrasive cleaners.
- Keep leftover paint. Label it by room and colour for small touch-ups.
- Prep properly. Most early failures come from skipped cleaning, priming or crack repair.

Frequently asked questions
How long does interior paint last?
A quality interior paint job usually lasts 5 to 10 years in low-traffic rooms, and 3 to 5 years in busy or wet areas. Preparation, paint quality and how the room is used make the biggest difference.
Can I just touch up instead of repainting?
For small marks on recent paint, yes. On older or faded walls, touch-ups usually show as patches. Repainting the whole wall, from corner to corner, gives an even finish.
Should I repaint before selling?
Often, yes. Fresh neutral walls help listing photos and inspections. Focus on living areas, hallways and any rooms with obvious wear or stains.
Is it OK to paint over cracks?
Only after they’re filled with the right product. Painting over an open crack just shows it again. Moving cracks need flexible fillers, and wide or growing cracks should be checked first.
