How much does it cost to paint a house?

So, you have made the decision to paint your house but have no idea what the cost will be?

It is tricky to give a set price as it really does depend on so many aspects such as preparation, age and condition of the home and of course labour and materials. For example a newly built house will most likely take much less preparation than a stone fronted bungalow from the 1920’s and therefore we always like to have a visit with you to give an accurate price and timeline.

Other considerations to factor in are any extra equipment needed such as scaffolding and ladders that get those hard to reach paint areas.

On average, house painting cost in Australia can be anywhere from $1,500 to $30,000 which depends on the size of your painting job, whether you need interior or exterior painting and what type of surface is being painted.

A paint quote may sound like a big investment, however when you think about the fact your home on average only needs this maintenance every 7 or so years, it does even out. We always like to think of painting as part of the entry fee to owning your own beautiful home and just like any maintenance, it does make a huge difference to the look and feel of your home.

If you are looking at selling your home, you may feel like cosmetic changes won’t make a huge difference however from personal experience investing into a fresh coat of paint can really change the look and interest of your home and it’s value.

Some common questions we receive are:

How many coats of paint do you apply?

So for a standard room we do a 2 coat system on ceiling and walls.

3 coat system (1 Undercoat and 2 Finish Coats) on windows, skirtings, doors and frames.

Depending on style of home this also changes the pricing depending on what preparation work needs to be included to get a fantastic finish.

How do you calculate your rates and get to the quoted price?

Factors such as surface preparation, repairs, heights of ceilings, if scaffolding is needed, the age of the house and general wear and tear off the home all come into play when coming up with a price.

Why can I find cheaper painters?

AJ Blunt pride themselves on having 38 years of experience and can guarantee that a professional, high quality standard will apply for all works we do. Preparation is extremely important when it comes to a quality finish. At times, a cheaper quote may mean that the prep is not up to scratch and therefore you will see results of that after a year or two. We talk you through every step of the way and will work with you to get the desired result you are after.

If you are at the start of your painting journey and wanting a rough guide before proceeding with a quote, some things to consider to let us know prior are things like the structure of your home, the condition of the surfaces and access. These all play a part in giving you an accurate guide. Before delivering a final price, we always ask that we do a site visit.

As always, we would love to hear from you at any time with any questions you have. Never hesitate to get in touch - we are here to help.
