AJ Blunt Painting, a leading provider of residential painting services in Adelaide, was engaged by ZJ Builders to complete the full internal and external painting of a striking new build in Summertown, in the Adelaide Hills. The centrepiece of the project is the home's exposed structural timber beams, finished in a penetrating stain system that showcases the natural timber while standing up to the Hills climate. New builds demand a different discipline to repaints clean lines, flawless finishes on brand-new surfaces, and tight coordination with the builder's programme and it's exactly the kind of project our team thrives on.
Summertown sits high in the Adelaide Hills, where homes are designed to make the most of their setting — and this new build is no exception. Exposed structural timber beams run through the design, bringing warmth and character to the architecture and making the timber finish one of the most important trades on the job. In the Hills, though, timber works hard: high UV in summer, cold wet winters, and wide temperature swings mean the stain system protecting those beams has to be chosen and applied with real care.
Making the timber the hero: With exposed beams as the architectural centrepiece, there was nowhere to hide. Stain uptake varies with timber species and grade, so achieving a rich, consistent colour from beam to beam — the first thing anyone sees when they walk in — demanded disciplined preparation and coat control.
Sequencing with the builder's programme: The best finish on exposed beams comes from staining before installation, sealing every face and all end grain without cutting in against roof sheeting and plasterboard. That meant working hand-in-hand with ZJ Builders' programme so the staining slotted into the build at exactly the right moment.
A finish built for the Hills climate: Summertown's UV exposure and weather extremes are unforgiving on exterior timber and coatings. Every system on the project — from the beam stain to the external acrylics — had to be selected for durability in one of Adelaide's toughest climates.
Sample panels and colour sign-off: Before a single beam was coated, we prepared stained sample panels for the builder and client to review, locking in the colour on the actual timber under natural light — no surprises, no guesswork.
Pre-finished beams, properly sealed: Coordinating closely with ZJ Builders, the beams were prepared and stained with every face and all end grain sealed, delivering a uniform, furniture-quality finish that in-situ staining simply can't match.
Premium systems throughout: A UV-rated penetrating stain system on the weather-exposed timber, an interior stain and clear-coat system on internal beams, and full premium acrylic systems across walls, ceilings, trims and the exterior — only the highest quality paints, applied to last.
